Karen Sharp - Pinner Jazz Club

Pinner Jazz

Karen impressed everyone with her gutsy tenor saxophone and booting baritone sound when she appeared at Pinner with Humphrey Lyttelton, a couple of years back. She’s joined tonight by trombonist Adrian Fry, her regular front-line companion and a fine soloist in his own right. Adrian, a prolific arranger and composer, is rapidly developing a distinctive style of his own. Their pianist is Richard Busiakiewicz and it’s Karen’s husband John Day on bass with John Perry on drums. Music to put a touch of spring into your step. Info line 020 8429 1260. Tickets from £11. Concert starts at 8pm, doors open at 7:30pm. Venue has wheelchair access.

Harrow Harmony – Pinner Free Church, Paine’s Lane, Pinner, 27th March 2010

Harrow Harmony

I went to Harrow Harmony’s latest concert last Saturday.  You might think that this is not really cause for comment – but, actually, it was.  They were very good.  The target audience is probably aged between 50 and 70. If this is you, then you should certainly give them a try next time.

My wife joined Harrow Harmony about 7 years ago. This means that – in my role as devoted spouse - I have been to approximately 20 concerts.  I have to admit that back in 2003 it was hard not to nod off.  Despite the obvious hard work of Hilary Musgrave, the musical director, and Micheila Connolly, the pianist, the songs in those days were average at best and occasionally not even that.  However, I am pleased to report that Saturday night’s event was the best I have been to so far.  Although some of the music was not to my taste (and perhaps the choir hadn’t quite got into their stride), overall the standard was high.  There was no longer one song they did really well and the rest were dull, this time all the songs were good and some were fabulous.  We have heard Over the Rainbow and Bridge over troubled water before, but tonight they were sung with real feeling.  My mother (88) sang all the way through the Geordie folk songs. My favourites were the three Andrew Lloyd Webber songs from Cats and the Richard Rodgers medley. The Cats songs were bright, funny, the diction was good and the choir were clearly enjoying themselves. The Richard Rodgers songs were energetic and thoroughly entertaining.  They finished with a short version of Oklahoma, sung with gusto: Oklahoma may be OK, but, Harrow Harmony, so are you.  More than OK! And I’ll be there next time...
