Heathfield School for Girls receives accreditation for Forest School status

Pupils within Early Years and Key Stage 1 have already begun to use the forest area for outdoor activities and have learnt maths and problem solving through counting and sorting conkers, science through fire safety and how materials change when they are heated (including toasting marshmallows!), caring for the environment, den building and having a ‘hands-on’ environment from which to learn kinaesthetically. The instigators of the Forest School network have defined the approach as an ‘inspirational process that offers children and young people regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands on learning experiences in a woodland environment’ (Forest Education Initiative, 2007). There is strong evidence that the Forest School scheme can dramatically enhance children’s holistic development and sensitivity for their natural environment. Miss Perkins first became interested in Forest Schools whilst studying for her Masters degree in Education, where she focused on the importance of outdoor learning. Heathfield is very excited at the developments for enhancing outdoor learning and even managed to apply to the Woodland Trust for 60 Jubilee trees (commemorating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee earlier this year). The school’s forest area will continue to take shape over the next 12 months. Anne Stevens, Headmistress, said “Being a Forest School will enable the holistic development and learning we value at Heathfield School for Girls, teach girls a range of skills and also contribute to our aim to promote sustainability and ecological awareness.”

| Pinner Sketch Club at 70 |
| Following a sumptuous meal Club Chairman Dr Elizabeth James gave an interesting presentation on the history of the club taking us on a journey from its humble beginnings during the dark days of World War II, through the Millenium celebrations right up to this wonderful Olympic and Jubilee year. The restaurant presented a magnificent birthday cake to the club, much to the delighted surprise of the members, and to rapturous applause the candles were blown out by Pinner Sketch Club President Sally Hyam. Our distinguished guest speaker, well known professional artist Roy Rodgers rounded off the celebrations with a beautifully illustrated talk on his paintings, inspirations and his love affair with Suffolk. Leading in Local Networking
Following the previous networking session at Evans House which was full to maximum capacity, Business Centre Manager Maria West is launching 2013 with a Speed Networking Event that promises to expand your business thinking and inspire your creativity. Three guest speakers will be attending Charlie Ryan from CMR training who will be discussing planning ahead and organising. Nick Auger, author of ‘Once is a Lifetime’, who successfully sailed around the world with no previous sailing experience, will provide insights into the challenges he faced and how he overcame them with a business slant. Finally successful local businessman and partner of Sobell Rhodes LLP, Andrew Rhodes, will be bestowing his ’12 golden nuggets of great business.’ Maria West, a staunch supporter of local businesses commented ‘We strongly suggest that people interested in attending book early as we are anticipating high demand. We have been really pleased in the way that networking at Evans House has taken off in the last few months; after receiving some great feedback from our last event we have followed the same style for this event and changed the business topics.’ The session will be held between 11am- 1pm on Friday 1st March in the Bannister Room at Evans House in Pinner and refreshments and a light lunch will be provided. To attend this event please contact a member of the Evans Easyspace team at reception by 25th February on 0208 429 7100 or email pinner@evanseasyspace.com

Santas take over Harrow town in aid of St Luke’s!
Back row Shane Davey and Stuart Amblin Front row left to right Nazim Ali, Cara Kelly Watkins, Jared Richards Over 300 people dashed 3-miles at St Luke’s Santa Dash event on Sunday 9 December which is expected to raise over £10,000. Men, women, children and even dogs on leads joined in the festive spirit by taking part in St Luke’s annual Santa Dash event on Sunday 9 December. Over 300 of St Luke’s Santas walked or dashed a 3-mile circular route around Harrow to raise vital funds for the Hospice. Participants started with a fun warm up before setting off from Claremont High School at 11am. They did 2 loops around the Kenton Road, Woodcock Hill and Shaftsbury Avenue. Everyone who took part received a well-deserved hot drink, mince pie and medal on completion. 13 year old, Cara Kelly Watkins has taken part in the Santa Dash for the past 2 years and was the first girl to complete the challenge at this year’s event. 11 year old, Jared Richard has just started cross country club at Haberdashers school and was the first boy to finish the dash. Jared says, ‘It’s much harder to run in a Santa Suit.’ Claremont High School student, Nazim Ali was the second boy to return and says, ‘It’s the first time that I have done the run. I saw a video about the Hospice in assembly. It made me think how sad it would be to be ill and away from home at Christmas and it made me think I am lucky to be at home with my family. I wanted to do something to raise money to help patients at St Luke’s at Christmas’. The first two men to complete the Santa Dash were Stuart Amblin, Head of PE at Claremont and Shane Davey, Head of PE at Salvatorian College. Shane also did the warm up for the event and says, ‘It’s the 3rd year that the school has been involved, we usually get a good crowd. It’s good fun and great to support a local charity like St Luke’s. Stuart says, ‘St Luke’s is a very special charity, and Claremont have a good relationship with the hospice. The pupils have learned about the work of the hospice through assemblies and visits and have taken part in a number of fundraising events. A couple of people close to me have cancer and I wanted to do something to raise money for the hospice.’ The first woman back was Claremont High School PE teacher, Kathryn Carswell who says, ‘I couldn’t resist the chance to run around Harrow in a Santa suit. It’s not something that you get to do every day! I wanted to help St Luke’s – I was really moved by a video about the hospice which was shown in assembly, and how brave the patients and families were.’ St Luke’s would like to thank everyone who took part and all the volunteers who helped out on the day. The Santa Dash is expected to raise over £10,000 once all the sponsorship money comes in. More information about St Lukes here
