|
Sir Ambrose Heal, of The Fives Court, in Moss Lane, died in 1959 and was a pioneer of modern design. Mr Heal introduced the use of simple, practical lines in furniture and making quality craftsmanship accessible to the middle classes. He was knighted in 1933 and appointed a royal designer for industry in 1939. On his death he was described by The Times as “one of the great artists and craftsmen of his time.” A plaque was unveiled on February 27 at 2.30pm by Mr Heal’s grandson, Oliver Heal. The date marks 120 years exactly since he joined the family firm, Heal’s. Harrow Times report

Heathfield School for Girls is spellbound |
| Pupils’ linguistic skills to be put to the test in Foreign Languages Spelling Bee semi-final. On Tuesday 5 February, Heathfield School for Girls hosted a regional semi-final of the Girls’ Day School Trust Foreign Language Spelling Bee. Heathfield pupils went head-to-head with pupils from eight other GDST schools from across the country, to prove their language skills. They were tested on the spelling and pronunciation of 90 words in rounds in five different languages - French, German, Spanish, Latin and Mandarin. The heat is one of four taking place across the country, involving 21 schools and over 370 pupils. The competition is designed to focus students’ attention on the importance of learning foreign languages as well as being a fun way to encourage students in Years 8 and 9 to actively improve their vocabulary, spelling and memory skills. The semi-finalists have already have won a round in their school, where they were tested on 40 words. Since then they have received 50 new words to learn for the upcoming competition. The winning teams will go through to the final at Howell’s School in Cardiff on 5 March, where they will be tested on 140 words in each language. The competition is one of a series of activities to mark the GDST’s 140th Anniversary which is being celebrated this year. Zara Siddiqi, Year 8 pupil, said “This was such a lovely chance to meet pupils from different Trust schools. I was very nervous not only for me but for my friends too.” Sara participated in the Latin semi-finals. Aarthi Raguraj, Year 8, added “It was a really good experience and it improved my French vocabulary. I would like to do this again.” Mrs Anne Stevens said: “We are hugely excited to be taking part in the spelling bee. It has never been more important for pupils to learn a foreign language, so they can compete in the global economy later in life, and we regard it as a vital part of our girls’ education. People often say the British are lazy at learning languages because most foreigners speak English but we can prove them wrong with this competition!” |
