Pinner resident winner of Vodafone UK World of Difference scheme for volunteers

 jane-whitehead

Paul Strickland Scanner Centre based at Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood will benefit from the generosity of the Vodafone foundation which funds Vodafone World of Difference UK, to provide volunteers to work for a UK charity for two months at no cost to the charity.

Out of several thousand applicants who competed for 500 places, one successful winner was Jane Whitehead. Jane nominated Paul Strickland Scanner Centre which she wanted to help.
Jane says: “I am thrilled to have been accepted to start work with as fantastic and worthwhile an organisation as the Paul Strickland Scanner Centre. The charity has provided endless support to my family and their technology offers the chance to catch and cure cancer early. Working on the fundraising team, I will be able to help promote the charity, work on events and on social media. I am truly honoured to work with such a lovely team and for such an important cause.”

Heathfield School for Girls is spellbound

Pupils’ linguistic skills to be put to the test in Foreign Languages Spelling Bee semi-final.
On Tuesday 5 February, Heathfield School for Girls hosted a regional semi-final of the Girls’ Day School Trust Foreign Language Spelling Bee.  Heathfield pupils went head-to-head with pupils from eight other GDST schools from across the country, to prove their language skills.  They were tested on the spelling and pronunciation of 90 words in rounds in five different languages - French, German, Spanish, Latin and Mandarin.
The heat is one of four taking place across the country, involving 21 schools and over 370 pupils. The competition is designed to focus students’ attention on the importance of learning foreign languages as well as being a fun way to encourage students in Years 8 and 9 to actively improve their vocabulary, spelling and memory skills.
The semi-finalists have already have won a round in their school, where they were tested on 40 words.  Since then they have received 50 new words to learn for the upcoming competition.
The winning teams will go through to the final at Howell’s School in Cardiff on 5 March, where they will be tested on 140 words in each language.  The competition is one of a series of activities to mark the GDST’s 140th Anniversary which is being celebrated this year.
Zara Siddiqi, Year 8 pupil, said “This was such a lovely chance to meet pupils from different Trust schools. I was very nervous not only for me but for my friends too.” Sara participated in the Latin semi-finals.
Aarthi Raguraj, Year 8, added “It was a really good experience and it improved my French vocabulary. I would like to do this again.”
Mrs Anne Stevens said: “We are hugely excited to be taking part in the spelling bee.  It has never been more important for pupils to learn a foreign language, so they can compete in the global economy later in life, and we regard it as a vital part of our girls’ education.  People often say the British are lazy at learning languages because most foreigners speak English but we can prove them wrong with this competition!”

Luke Teague Exhibition of paintings

Luke Tague

Lighthouses, the Southbank, Andy Warhol and Alfred Hitchcock are among the themes of paintings by Luke Teague currently being exhibited at Hatch End’s Harrow Arts Centre.  Seventeen paintings and one sculpture will be displayed in the Gallery of the Centre and along one of its corridors until 27 January.
Luke Teague, who at 22 years old is the youngest member of Harrow Open Studios, produces oil-based paintings, usually on large canvases. “I would love to see them displayed by Harrow businesses”, he said, “supporting a local artist”. He has studied at Byam Shaw in London and Loughborough University. Growing up in Harrow Weald, the surrounding ‘Green Belt’ was an early inspiration for his first landscape paintings. “A painting of a view from Old Redding was the first painting I ever sold” he said at the opening of his exhibition on 9 January. “Now” he said, “I am interested in human interaction with the built environment, highlighting relationships with particular buildings and places”. Figurative painting is another area of his work, particularly portraiture. Recent subjects have ranged from Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn to Alfred Hitchcock.

Leading in Local Networking

Following the previous networking session at Evans House which was full to maximum capacity, Business Centre Manager Maria West is launching 2013 with a Speed Networking Event that promises to expand your business thinking and inspire your creativity.
Three guest speakers will be attending Charlie Ryan from CMR training who will be discussing planning ahead and organising. Nick Auger, author of ‘Once is a Lifetime’, who successfully sailed around the world with no previous sailing experience, will provide insights into the challenges he faced and how he overcame them with a business slant.  Finally successful local businessman and partner of Sobell Rhodes LLP, Andrew Rhodes, will be bestowing his ’12 golden nuggets of great business.’
Maria West, a staunch supporter of local businesses commented ‘We strongly suggest that people interested in attending book early as we are anticipating high demand. We have been really pleased in the way that networking at Evans House has taken off in the last few months; after receiving some great feedback from our last event we have followed the same style for this event and changed the business topics.’
The session will be held between 11am- 1pm on Friday 1st March in the Bannister Room at Evans House in Pinner and refreshments and a light lunch will be provided.
To attend this event please contact a member of the Evans Easyspace team at reception by 25th February on 0208 429 7100 or email pinner@evanseasyspace.com
