Pinner Sketch Club at 70
Following a sumptuous meal Club Chairman Dr Elizabeth James gave an interesting presentation on the history of the club taking us on a journey from its humble beginnings during the dark days of World War II, through the Millenium celebrations right up to this wonderful Olympic and Jubilee year. The restaurant presented a magnificent birthday cake to the club, much to the delighted surprise of the members, and to rapturous applause the candles were blown out by Pinner Sketch Club President Sally Hyam. Our distinguished guest speaker, well known professional artist Roy Rodgers rounded off the celebrations with a beautifully illustrated talk on his paintings, inspirations and his love affair with Suffolk. Pinner Sketch Club is a thriving dynamic art society and warmly welcomes new members. For further information please see our web site pinnersketchclub.co.uk.

Heathfield School for Girls takes part in the world’s biggest multi-venue science lesson |
| On Tuesday 13th November, Heathfield School for Girls attempted to enter the world record books. A science experiment involving around 2,300 girls at 26 schools across the country – 43 of them from Heathfield School for Girls – measured gravity in a bid to set the record for the world’s biggest practical science lesson in multiple venues. The experiments measured the value of acceleration due to gravity. One measured the time taken for an object to drop a set distance, and the other measured time with a swinging pendulum. Pupils taking part in the experiments range in age from ten to 15. “This experiment was such a lot of fun. I could not sleep with excitement at taking part in a world record breaking attempt.” said Anushka Patel, aged 10. Holly Brewster, aged 10, added “I always read the Guinness Book of Records and I can’t believe that my school will be in the book too!” All the participating students are pupils of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), the leading group of independent girls’ schools in the UK, as part of this year’s 140th anniversary celebrations. “We’ve been planning this record attempt to mark our anniversary for months,” said Anne Stevens, Headmistress. “The most disturbing statistic from the Institute of Physics’ recent report was that nearly half of all co-ed maintained schools in England do not send even one girl on to do physics at A-level. “In the girls-only environment of the GDST, science subjects in general, and physics in particular, are hugely popular and successful. At Heathfield School for Girls around 53% of our girls study A-level physics or chemistry, and they do very well at it. The enthusiasm for this experiment, right across our school, shows the degree to which we’re bucking some of the less encouraging educational trends.” |

On Thursday 22 November, the Music Department at Heathfield School for Girls will be performing a number of pieces for the Autumn Term Concert. The various orchestras and choirs at the school will be performing ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ by Mussorgsky, ‘Carnival of the Animals’ by Saint-Saëns, Pergolesi’s ‘Stabat Mater’ and ‘Adiemus’ by Jenkins.
A number of soloists will perform in the Stabat Mater piece including Year 13 pupil, Alice, and Yasmin, Year 12. Pianists in the Carnival of the Animals include Sansy, Year 9 and Sally, Year 11.
Mr McElwaine, Director of Music, will be conductor. The Heathfield choirs have been successful at the Watford Festival for five years running, winning the Joan Bakhurst Cup each year.
Mr McElwaine said “I chose the Stabat Mater as it is one of the best pieces written for female voices, the Carnival piece is an opportunity for our excellent pianists to showcase their talent and the Pictures piece of music was chosen for its fun and variety and is a rewarding piece for our Junior girls to participate in too.”
To purchase tickets, please contact the school office on 020 8868 2346 or email enquiries@hea.gdst.net
