Walk for Wings of Hope Charity

  heathfield-charity-walk 001.jpg

On Friday last Rebecca Emery, Apiramy Navendan, Kiran Pooni, Chloe Ferguson and Sanjna Shah, (team Encore) did a sponsored walk from Wembley Stadium to the London Eye (Waterloo).

They are students from Heathfield School(Year 10) in Pinner raising money for less fortunate children in Inda and Malowi for the Wings of Hope charity. The money raised will go  towards giving these children a proper education. As a team, they are so proud that we live in a country where education is a right and we feel strongly that this can be achieved all around the world. Education is a very powerful thing as it allows people to think for themselves and also helps stop the cycle of poverty. We go by the saying: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
They left Wembley at 1pm and walked the long 10 miles through Harlsden, Kensal Green, Westbourne Park, Paddington, Bayswater,  Hyde Park, Green Park, The Mall and along Westminster Bridge to the London Eye.  Thankfully, the weather was on thier side and the sun shone most of the day. They arrived at the London Eye at 5.30
So far they  have raised over £500.   Just Giving Page: if you would like to contribute click here

Heathfield School for Girls in Pinner has been shortlisted for an award at the Independent School Awards 2012 in the Education Initiative of the Year category.

Heathfield

The award will be made at a special ceremony in November at the National Motorcycle Museum, presented by Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
The School has used and developed new ways of interacting with both pupils and parents and have used blogs, social networking and new technologies including iPods and iPads. This has helped engage parents’ with their daughter’s learning as well as improving home/school communication.

For example in the Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception), the process of recording evidence of learning was transformed with personal Online Learning Journeys for each child, which allowed parents to access their child’s accomplishments from home and celebrate their child’s achievements and extend learning beyond the classroom.
Social Networking platforms are being used from Year 4 to Year 13 and have enriched class discussions, encouraged contribution from less confident students and provided a valuable platform for supporting revision. GCSE and A-Level students are able to support each other and connect with their teachers whilst on study leave in a way that has not been possible before.
Heathfield School for Girls has received overwhelmingly positive reaction from both parents and girls. Mrs McCulloch, Head of Juniors, said “ICT is an integral part of learning at Heathfield and we are delighted to be nominated. Our parents value the instant access to their daughters’ daily development through our on line Learning Journeys and Blogs.”
Emily Newman, History teacher, added “Using Edmodo with my pupils has opened up a whole new range of teaching and learning opportunities beyond the classroom. I have been able to make regular announcements about History in the news, keep in touch with pupils who have been absent or on revision leave and get normally very quiet pupils engaged and passionate in online debates.”
Anne Stevens, Headmistress, said “"We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this award which acknowledges the collaborative and innovative way everyone in our school community uses ICT to enhance learning and communication."

Young Woman in Public Affairs Award to Pupil at Heathfield School for Girls

 heathfieldsep

Heathfield School for Girls pupil, Krithi Ravi, aged 17, from Pinner, has won the Zonta International District 29 Young Woman in Public Affairs (YWPA) Award 2012. Her entry, which won the London competition in March, was the winner in a district covering the Netherlands, Spain, Russia, UK, Ireland and northern Germany and France
The award was presented to Krithi, at a meeting of the London Zonta club.
She received a certificate with $1,000 from Zonta International and 1,000 euros from the District, presented by Catherine McEwan, Governor of District 29.
The Award is part of the Zonta International Leadership Development Programme, which is designed to encourage young women to participate in public and political life, by recognizing their commitment and dedication to the advancement of the status of women.
Krithi won the award for her interest in and work for the status of women internationally and for her leadership and contribution to her community. In particular:
-       Participation in rural health camps in India
-       Analysis of how to improve the lives of, and change attitudes towards women worldwide
 -       Support of the Wings of Hope and PLAN charities providing free education to children in India and Malawi and to some of the poorest nations
 -       Work at Barnardo’s charity shop, ‘amazing with the customers…helps them understand Gift Aid’ and volunteers at Michael Sobell Hospice
 -       School leadership as a prefect and Marketing Executive at Nat West Schoolbank, and organiser of form events, understanding the importance of team work, communication, time management and delegation.
Catherine said: “The competition was very tough this year and Krithi came top in a very strong field of applicants.  Krithi's responses showed real understanding of the issues facing women and her first-hand knowledge and experience in other parts of the world, too, made her a deserved winner.
She is an outstanding recipient for this Award and someone to watch out for in the future.”

Pinner pupil reaches final of nationwide school bake-off competition

 heathfield school bake off

Weeks of practice and preparation reach a conclusion on Thursday as the six regional winners of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) Bake Off competition meet in the final at Ipswich High School GDST on 18 October – and among them is Heathfield School for Girls, Pinner pupil Charlotte Pragnell, aged 13.
Judging their creations will be Mel Giedroyc, TV presenter and comedienne and an alumna of Oxford High School GDST, and Jane Sago, Vice Chairman of the Suffolk East Federation Women’s Institute.
Charlotte and the other contestants will design and bake cupcakes to mark the 140th anniversary of the Girls’ Day School Trust. “It’s a big milestone, 140 years,” said Mel Giedroyc. “It’s well beyond the sell-by date of any cake – but not, I’m glad to say, of the talent on show in this competition.”
To reach the final, GDST pupils competed in regional bake-offs, in which they were each asked to bake a Lemon Victoria Sandwich cake to a recipe provided by celebrity chef and cookery writer Mary Berry who, like Mel Giedroyc, is an alumna of a GDST school – in her case, the Royal High School in Bath.
“It takes a great deal to do well in a competition like this,” said Helen Fraser, Chief Executive of the GDST. “Not least, you need to be able to keep your cool in the heat of the kitchen. It’s a test of character as much as of skill.”
The finalists will prepare and bake 12 cupcakes and put forward six of them for judging by Mel Giedroyc and Jane Sago. The judges will be assessing presentation, technique and taste, and in the event of a tie, the marks for taste will be the decider.
“For the contestants, this is all about baking,” said Mel Giedroyc. “For me as a judge, though, it’s an exercise in arithmetic. Six contestants times six cupcakes each equals an awful lot of calories – and possibly, a fight for the last cake on the plate with my fellow judge.”
“The GDST Bake Off is an interesting and novel part of our 140th anniversary celebrations,” said Helen Fraser. “GDST pupils excel academically and they are also highly talented in many other areas. In sport, in science, in business, in the arts, in public service, many of them reach the top; and in traditional skills such as baking, too, our pupils, like their creations, can rise to the occasion.”
Mrs Stevens added ““Not only were the cakes excellent but the girls displayed ingenuity and creativity in their designs. Such was the interest in the competition at Heathfield that several cakes were made for the preliminary round and slices sold to raise money for the school charity – a double bonus, with fundraising and Charlotte progressing to the final”.

Speed Networking Event at Evans House, Pinner

Evans Easyspace Pinner

Following on from the success of the last event, Evans House in Pinner are set to hold another business event in the form of Speed Networking on Friday 26th October.
Taking place between 11.30am and 1.30pm the event welcomes three accomplished guest speakers; Louise Heasman from Modern Day Marketing, Orson Jones from Lawrence Jones Business Analyst, Shahid Akmal the Managing Director of Exquisitus Ltd.
The speed networking will involve delegates presenting a 30 second introduction, then after the bell, moving one seat clockwise to meet another prospect until all delegates are familiar with each other.
All guest speakers have many years of experience within the business sector and are looking forward to the Speed Networking event being held at Evans House. Orson Jones said,
‘Maria offering me the opportunity to speak to SME business owners at this Evans Easyspace Pinner event is a fantastic high point for me this year.  Most of my clients are SME operators, and I want to leave the attendees with an understanding of what makes a Business Coach different from the typical management consultant of whom it is said, "They borrow your watch to tell you the time." My talk on the Theory of Constraints will give them a tool to apply in their business to good effect.
My introduction to Maria's team was by solicitor colleague Sundeep Bhatia who regularly uses their services.  Sundeep invited me to meet at Evans House on business and I was impressed with the quality and efficiency of the reception staff, the waiting area and of the room provided with for our meeting.  You would have to work hard to beat an Evans Easyspace environment as a place to take clients who you want to impress.’
Louise Heasman opened up an aromatherapy practise in Harley Street, partly created the ‘Women in Business’ network and also developed ‘The Athena Network’. The entrepreneur is keen to pass on the knowledge she has learnt and seek out business potential for other business owners. Louise said, ‘I’m looking forward to meeting all the ambitious and highly motivated business owners on the day and hope I can add value to the event in what I have to say and offer.’
Speaker Shahid Akmal said his contribution will be ‘talking about the power of our unconscious mind, how to harness that power and have a whole brain approach to work and life and therefore amazing achievements!’
‘I have used the Evans House many times in the past and have always found it to be a fantastic location for me and my delegates. The diverse range of companies as well as the people, including the Centre Manager Maria West and her staff, make visiting and presenting there a pleasure. It is events like this that give added value to clients and I am excited about participating and helping them to go further in their businesses.’
You are invited to join ‘Speed Networking’ in Meeting Room 2 at Evans House, 107 Marsh Road, Pinner, Middlesex, HA5 5PA.

"Your Pinner News" has Amazing Story - Rocking Rabbi in Pinner uniting all faiths

A religious leader from Pinner is putting his musical talent to good use in an attempt to unite people of all faiths.Rabbi Danny Bergson, of the Pinner Synagogue, in Cecil Park, is a member of a new six-piece band which includes a Buddhist nun, a Catholic Priest and devotees from the Hindu, Muslim and Christian faiths.
Aptly called All Faiths, the group produces western pop with a mix of their own cultural influences and have received praise from world leaders including President Barack Obama.
Rabbi Bergson, a 34-year-old father-of-four, told Your Pinner News more about the group. He said: “I am passionate about music and this project is a great way of bringing different faiths and beliefs together using the love of music as our common ground. We come together with one message. A message of unity, peace and tolerance.
“We release a single in the autumn called Faith Unites Us All and we are working on an album. God gives everyone a talent and it’s important that they work on making the most of that talent whatever it may be.”
The talented guitarist and singer has musical influences ranging from Jeff Beck to the man he describes as “the Bob Dylan of Jewish music” Shlomo Carlebach.
Rabbi Bergson has cause for another celebration this month when he, his wife Anna and their four young children celebrate their first year at the Pinner Synagogue.
Rabbi Bergson added: “We have received a warm welcome in our first year from all sections of the community, religious and secular.
“I’m very keen to promote the fact that the Jewish community in Pinner is not sealed off and insular but warm, welcoming and open. I encourage much more interaction between the faiths in the village as I believe we all have our part to play in making life better for everyone.”To find out more about the project visit www.allfaiths.org.uk.
