Local Pinner boy selected for Commonwealth Games
Report by Christelle Jones:
This young man works incredibly hard as you can see from below and his ultimate goal is the Los Angeles Olympics.
A young student living in Pinner just qualified for the Commonwealth Games taking place in August. Casey Jones, a 14 year old Year 10 pupil from John Lyon is an Epee Fencer and will be fencing for Wales in both the Under 17 and the Under 20 Age Category. His selection covers both the Team and the Individual events for both age category’s.
Casey started fencing at the age of 7, when a change encounter  introduced him to the sport. He visited a friend who had a fencing lesson. As he was just sitting on the side waiting to go home, he was invited to join in for the last 20 minutes of the session. The next week he was back and became a full member of the club.
Since than his fencing changed from fun fencing on a Saturday to having lessons and he soon started entering competitions. He came last in his first competition, but instead of being put off by the sport, he was encouraged to try harder. 2 years later he represented his country for the first time at Challenge Wratislavia. This is the biggest Under 15 competition in Europe and takes place in Wroclow in Poland. He has since been selected to represent Wales every year after that. Sadly due to Covid a team was not sent last year
Casey has always had his eyes set on the Common Wealth Games which same as the Olympics' takes place every 4 years. He was elated when the announcements for England, Scotland and Wales came out last week, and even happier when he saw he was selected for two age groups.
Casey in under the instruction of Oana Puiu, Head Coach for the High Performance Project at Leon Paul Fencing Centre in Hendon.
He is also on the Great Britain Squad which saw him travelling to Belgrade, Grenoble and Krakow to name a few over the last few months. He has upcoming tournaments in Hungary, Serbia, Germany, Greece, France, Denmark and Poland
Casey is the current Under 15 Champion, Previous titles included The Youth Series Champion as well as the Bavarian  ( German ) and Welsh National Champion.
