School Dynamics launches our brand new Love Breakfast! campaign
We are seeing far too many school students, especially Sixth Formers, slumped on desks mid-morning – even before we start our workshops, so we know it’s not our jokes sending them to sleep! Meet our Love Breakfast cartoon strip and join in the competition to name our fabulous little characters, who are going to do all they can to make sure all school students remember to have breakfast AND eat the right things to help them concentrate and learn during the school Too many students are telling us they’re coming to school without breakfast – some even without a drink…. we know you’re short of time and that it takes all your energy just to get out of bed for school, but you DO need some food to start your brain working…. How is anyone concentrating? They’re not – we know they aren’t because they are telling us that too. We’re going to help put this right. Too many students simply don’t know what’s good to eat to help them concentrate and stay alert during the day, or even getting to the first break….and we know from the breakfast survey results that they do appreciate some help, guidance and reminders as to what might be good to eat! So watch out for the brand new Love Breakfast Briefings coming to YOUR school – and in the meantime all 13-18 year olds can take the breakfast survey online at our web site www.school-dynamics.co.uk and if you want to suggest names for our Love Breakfast characters email tellmemore@school-dynamics.co.uk with your suggestions, or see us on Twitter at @school_dynamics or our Facebook page. Chinese celebration at Heathfield School
To celebrate the 2012 Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dragon, the Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine (CI for TCM) at London South Bank University organised a Chinese New Year Celebration Road Show and Heathfield School GDST, Pinner, was one of the schools the Institute visited and the only school in the Harrow borough. The troupe performed to pupils from the Senior and Junior School. The dancers performed traditional folk dances and music; martial arts and also demonstrated the instrument Bruce Lee used – Shuang jie gun. Eight pupils were chosen how to use the instrument and prizes were awarded. Each of the performances was introduced with a short introduction on why each piece is performed and the tradition behind them. One of the instruments played, the Suona, is a very difficult instrument to learn and even the performer took 16 years to learn how to play. Heathfield pupils have been studying Chinese Mandarin for a number of years and their first cohort of 24 GCSE pupils were awarded with 20 A* and 4 A grades in August 2011. The performance troupe came from the Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine and comprises students and doctors who, next to their studies in Chinese medicine, cultivate their passion for Chinese traditional arts and are fully trained performers. Their mesmerizing show included traditional Chinese dancing, martial arts, folk dancing and music.

Poppy Treadaway meets Peter Andre
Popstar and children's author Peter Andre presented twenty London primary school pupils with awards at City Hall today (26 January), for winning stories they have written about where they live, as part of the Mayor of London's drive to improve literacy across the capital. Poppy Treadaway, Year 7, from Heathfield School in Pinner, was selected as one of 20 winning stories out of 4,000 entries, and was the only one selected from the Harrow borough. Children from over 200 schools were invited to write stories inspired by landmarks where they live for the 'Welcome to my Borough' writing competition, which was organised by the Mayor and Transport for London (TfL). The competition was part of the Big WoW (Walk once a Week), a month long walking relay for schools organised by TfL, to encourage children to walk to school and make walking part of their lifestyle. The ‘Welcome to my Borough’ writing competition is also part of the Mayor's efforts to improve literacy in London, through Team London, his ambitious volunteering programme. The Mayor of London Boris Johnson, said: “This fabulous competition gets young Londoners out and about exploring our wonderful city, equipping them with the skills and imagination they need for the future and encouraging them to be fit, healthy and independent.” Peter Andre who has given his backing to the Mayor's literacy programmes, said: “Congratulations to all the winners and everyone that took part in the competition. As a father myself, I think it is important that our kids practise reading and writing every day and the stories the winners have come up with show what great imaginations they have and what an inspirational city London is.” Poppy wrote about the views from Harrow-on-the-Hill, her favourite part of the borough to walk, and also mentioned some of her favourite eating places. She said “It was amazing when I heard my entry had been selected. I was really excited about going to the awards ceremony and it was a really good experience, especially when I met Peter Andre.” Her article and picture was on display at City Hall and will be displayed at the Olympic Stadium too. Mrs Anne Stevens, Headmistress, said “I am delighted with Poppy and her success in this competition and many of the staff and girls at school are looking forward to walking her route in Harrow-on-the-Hill. As a Geography teacher I have always encouraged my pupils to take an interest in and observe their surroundings and all these walks will do just that.”
