Norman Kember

Norman Kember  was in Corbetts Bookshop Pinner on Saturday 31 March 2007 to personally sign his important new book "Hostage in Iraq". Published by Darton Longman and Todd on the 23 March 2007, a year after his dramatic release, Norman Kember reveals the story behind the controvesy of his capture in Bagdad. Corbett's bookshop has now closed in Pinner

In the book Norman Kember describes in detail his four month ordeal, during which he was imprisoned in a small room and chained to two Canadian peace activists, James Loney and Harmeet Singh Sooden and the American Tom Fox who was executed by his captors. Kember experiences, fear, lonlieness, boredom and at one point contemplated suicide. Yet his wry sense of humour never quite deserts him and at the heart of Hostage in Iraq is the extraordinary story of what it was that led a 74 year old retired university professor from Pinner to decide to go to Iraq in the first place.

The book includes previously unseen drawings and notes made by Norman Kember who kept a journal during his captivity and invented games with his fellow captives. Moving gripping, surprising, Hostage in Iraq is a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit.
The customers were able to talk to Norman a Pinner resident about his experiences as well as purchase a signed copy of his book
