Vintage Cars 1936 MG SA
2.2litre 6 cylinder engine. 4 seater Tickford body. The chassis and engine would have been driven from the MG Factory at Abingdon to Salmons Tickford factory in Newport Pagnall (now part of Aston Martin) for the body to be fitted and then sold through the MG dealership as normal.
I have owned the car for 18 years being my 3rd pre war MG which I have owned continuously since 1973 having bought my first restoration project a 1939 MGTA when I was just 20. I try and drive the car every week, 52 weeks a year as this keeps brakes and general mechanics in good working order and not seizing up. The previous 2 MGs I rebuilt in nut and bolt restorations, enjoying the ‘hands on’ side of a restoration project. Most satisfying to take a non running wreck of a car completely apart and gradually rebuild it. Both these restoration projects took 4 years each of evenings and weekends so not a quick process. Finding suitable replacement parts is not as much of an issue as one might imagine. There are sufficient pre war MG’s about to ensure that there is a thriving ‘cottage’ industry of small manufacturers prepared to make, cast, manufacture new parts to original specification.
The car is fine driving in modern traffic one just needs to make allowances for brakes and acceleration that are not quite the match of modern cars. Out on the open road then she will quite happily cruise at 65/70 all day long and has a soft easy motion and so a delight to drive in the country.
