Support your local British Legion | | The Royal British Legion is the leading tri-service charity that provides long term financial, social and emotional support to millions who have served, or who are currently serving, in the UK’s Armed Forces and their dependants. The Legion lobbies government on a wide range of issues including mental and physical health, housing, homelessness, employment, community and adult care, disability, skills development and debt management. It is the custodian of the nation’s Remembrance and Two Minute Silence. Over £100 million was spent in 2009 in carrying out its work. Over £32 million came from the Poppy Appeal, the rest from events, legacies, donations, sponsorships, sales, fees and investments. The Legion has nearly 400,000 members in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (Scotland has its own formation), 2,800 Branches, 650 associated Clubs. In this area there is a Branch with associated Club in Eastcote (Southbourne Gardens) and Ruislip (High Street). Legion membership is open to anybody over the age of 16. You do not have to be serving or ex-service to apply, just a belief in the aims and objectives of the Royal British Legion. You have to have to be a Branch member before you can apply for Club membership. Both these local branches are always keen to hear from anybody who wants to join and/or who can spare just a few hours to help collect for the Poppy Appeal in the Eastcote, Pinner, Ruislip, Northwood areas. Local Student wins "Our Space" competition
|
|
In July Mala Mawkin entered the “our space” competition to go to the Johnson and Kennedy NASA space centres in America. The competition required her to use the astronaut Richard Garriott’s mission as a springboard to her own imaginative space adventure. She chose to produce a short video about future space travel. Mala researched about future technological ideas in space travel although this was hard as many of these were merely concepts. She finally chose an idea that related to Lorentz’s force. It said that if spacecrafts in the future were to emit charged particles they could be deflected in a planets magnetic field and travel through space. Mala was invited to the Farnborough Air Show where the results were announced. Much to her surprise she had won the competition of which her prize was a trip to an American space camp and the opportunity to show my video to the House of Commons in December....More to follow
