Successful Workplace Pensions seminar hosted by local IFA Les Conway of Essentially Financial
Local IFA, Les Conway, who is Director of Essentially Financial, based in Pinner, hosted a topical seminar last week, covering the changes that are about to take place with Workplace Pensions. Attended by a range of professionals, including accountants, solicitors and insurance brokers, it was a great success.
Keynote speaker, managing partner of Paradigm Pensions and well-known ‘Pensions Guru’, Steve Bee, gave a very interesting, useful and amusing talk about the fundamental changes that Workplace Pensions will be undergoing from 1st October this year. From this date, compulsory enrolment for all employees with annual earnings over £7,475 will be phased in.  The new legislation will be onerous to comply with and costly, if employers get it wrong, with fines of up to £50,000 and custodial sentences for major breaches.
Steve was able to cut through the technicalities associated with the subject of pensions and convey his message in a straightforward, informative and entertaining way. He emphasised that employers need to ensure compliance with the legislation and also need to make contributions and cover the costs.  Even if there’s a scheme in place, they will need to ensure that it complies.
Steve achieved notoriety when he became the first person ever to submit evidence in cartoon strip
format to a Commons Select Committee and he is regularly consulted by Government Departments
for comment and opinion.
Other topical speakers on the day included Graeme Godfrey of Best Go Private who explored the numerous options with health insurance and Roger Levitt of Cubism Law, who talked about mediation when business relationships break down. All three speakers were very well received and there was a lively discussion after each talk.
A buffet lunch was served before the seminar began and attendees were able to network at the same time.

Laksitha Sivakumaran from Heathfield School GDST, Pinner, receives an award

Laksitha Sivakumaran from Heathfield School GDST, Pinner, received the award for outstanding attainment in her academic studies and extra-curricular business activities.
The award was sponsored and presented by Harrow-based firm of accountants, RDP Newmans.
Laksitha received the highest marks possible for one particular discursive module in Business Economics – a feat rarely achieved. She is now studying Banking and International Finance at City University, London.
As a result of her achievements, combined with her interest in finance, the 18-year-old was presented with the RDP Newmans Business Prize 2012 at a special ceremony on Thursday 1 March, at Heathfield School. Part of the award was a trophy and Kindle.

At the Pinner & Northwood Business Club    meeting on Wednesday 29th February the Economist Guru, Dennis Turner spoke. Dennis, previously the top economist at HSBC talked to the club about the UK economy. One of the UK’s most fascinating and lucid commentators on economic movements and theories, Dennis regularly speaks at events for the finance community. He started his career in Whitehall and remains an influential advisor within UK government.
